Depression is a leading malady in today’s society, with approximately one in fifteen adults experiencing it every year. An estimated one in six people will experience depression sometime in their lives. If you feel you are suffering from depression or a loved one is, contact us today to get help. Depression is treatable and defeatable, and we want to help!

What is Depression?

Depression is a clinically recognized mental illness that impacts everything, including how you think, feel, and act. Sufferers experience sad feelings, lose interest in what they once enjoyed, and experience severe setbacks in functionality at work and in relationships.

The American Psychiatric Association lists the following depression symptoms that can vary from mild to severe:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., inability to sit still, pacing, handwringing) or slowed movements or speech (these actions must be severe enough to be observable by others)
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.

If you or someone you know is struggling or having thoughts of suicide, call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org. In life-threatening situations, call 911.

Could I Be Depressed?

People experience depression differently. It can also develop at different times in your life or even at different times of the year. For example, postnatal depression sets in shortly after giving birth, while a seasonal form of depression can often set in after the time changes and winter sets in. Different types of depression have different symptoms.

Your form of depression may also be classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Online assessments may point to depression, but an accurate diagnosis is only possible from a licensed healthcare provider. They often refer patients to therapists like Tri-Star Counseling for help. If you are experiencing any of the depression symptoms listed above, contact your primary care physician and talk to them about depression and how you feel.
