Nevertheless, depression is a leading malady in today’s society, with approximately one in fifteen adults experiencing it every year. Freeing yourself from the stigma-driven myths surrounding it may be key to finding and sustaining the level of control that so many of us seek.

Depression = laziness?

Depression looks different for everyone, but fatigue and loss of interest in things you once enjoyed are very common symptoms. Read: just because you’re lethargic, it doesn’t mean you’re lazy. Depression is the ultimate life-sucker. If you’re suffering from depression and still finding ways to get through the day, you’re likely a fighter who’s anything but lazy.

“Just get over it”

Depression is a clinically recognized mental illness. If you’ve been suffering from symptoms for more than two weeks, you can be diagnosed. Ask yourself this: If someone you love got diagnosed with the flu, would you tell them to “just get over it?” Probably not! You’d get them medicine, or comfort food, or whatever else they might need to feel better. Getting the help you need if you’re dealing with depression is no different: it’s an act of love and caring for yourself.

Depression isn’t real

No one wants to be clinically depressed, especially with all the stigmas that surround mental health. For many, depression is part of a normal life with or without a major trauma that triggered it.
