Topic Of Discussion
Where are all of our workaholics out there?! That’s right…lookin’ at you!
These days, especially for Millennials who came of age at the peak of hustle culture, burnout is common and self-care is coveted. But as much as many of us might value self-care, sometimes implementing a self-care routine can seem like just one more task to check off…and thereby not really self-care! So you want a self-care routine that actually sticks? Read on for real relaxation!
1. Start Small
Starting a new routine can – and really should – be a process. Change doesn’t happen overnight (even if you really, really want it to!) To implement a lasting change in your routine, focus on small, sustainable, self-care practices to get started. Maybe you want to do the dishes every night before bed. Maybe morning meditation is how you want to start your days. Maybe you’re looking to hit the gym after work. No matter what you choose, try to do it daily for two straight weeks before adding something new to the mix. Creating habits helps your self-care routine to stick because trusting your process is in and of itself self-care! So stick with it!
2. Treat Yourself
Self-care has many faces. Engaging in wellness – whether physical or mental – certainly counts as self-care. That said, make sure your self-care routine includes something you genuinely enjoy doing. Got a favorite TV show? Watching an episode every night can be part of your self-care routine! So can a hot bath or a daily walk. Cultivating happiness = bettering yourself.
3. Stay Positive
Consistency is key…but nobody’s perfect! If, in the process of implementing or maintaining your self-care routine you miss a day, you can go ahead and congratulate yourself on being totally normal. Check-in with yourself and adjust your routine as needed. Self-care isn’t self-care if you’re beating yourself up over it. It’s okay to miss days and make changes as long as you’re caring for yourself in the ways you need.
