3 Tips for Tackling Tough Stuff in Therapy: Getting Comfortable with Vulnerability

Category:

Therapy isn’t always comfortable but, with vulnerability, you can grow and find your power.

Topic Of Discussion

Therapy isn’t always easy. Being vulnerable can feel, well…vulnerable. From finding the right therapist to processing breakthroughs, therapy can cause some discomfort. Vulnerability, after all, isn’t a comfortable feeling…but that doesn’t necessarily make it a negative feeling either. Any growth has its growing pains, but growth is still the result! Read on for tips on how to grow through your vulnerability and find your power.

1. Find a therapist you trust

By the time many people are seeking therapy, they’re in a hurry to start. Whether newly in crisis or having reached a boiling point, it’s normal to want to get help fast. This is okay…and often possible too, whether by asking friends for referrals or even just Googling therapists in your local area. If you find a great fit right away, that’s great. And if you don’t, that might be where some perseverance comes in. It’s good for your therapist to challenge you, but if you’re consistently struggling to connect, it’s okay to explore other options. Vulnerability comes easiest with a therapist you trust. The more therapists you talk to, the more likely you’ll find a fit.

2. Remember: it’s a marathon, not a sprint

So you’ve found a therapist you trust? Good news: the hardest part is likely over. It takes courage to ask for help and find the right person to help you. From here, the focus can be on progress. Feeling nervous? It’s okay. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Your earlier sessions will likely focus on answering questions and getting to know your therapist better anyway. You can start small and build towards breakthroughs, especially if you need time to get comfortable feeling vulnerable. The right therapist will help establish a pace that works best for you.

3. Practice self-compassion

Once you’ve found your pace and have started experiencing some growth, there will still be peaks and valleys in your progress. It’s normal. If a session leaves you discouraged, be kind to yourself. Chances are good that your vulnerability one session, will serve you the next. So keep at it!
