3 Things to Remember When Coping with Grief

Category: //

There’s no right or wrong way to grieve, but there are some things you can keep in mind as you navigate this difficult journey.

Topic Of Discussion

Grief is a natural response to loss, and it’s something we’ll all experience at some point in our lives. If you’re grieving a loss and feel overwhelmed, lonely, and/or confused, you’re not alone. Remember: There’s no right or wrong way to grieve, and there’s no set timeline for healing. But there are some things you can keep in mind as you navigate this difficult journey.

1. Give yourself permission to feel your emotions

It’s okay to be sad, angry, confused, or even relieved. There is no shame in feeling whatever you’re feeling, and you don’t need to apologize for it – especially not right away. Emotions can come in waves, and it’s important to allow yourself to ride them out without judgment. Suppressing your feelings can only prolong the healing process, so try to find healthy ways to express yourself, whether by talking to a friend, journaling, or finding a creative outlet.

2. Take care of your physical and mental health

Grief is exhausting. As it takes a toll on your body and your mind, it’s more important than ever to prioritize self-care. This doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon or start a new hobby. Self-care can be as simple as making sure you’re eating regular meals, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated. Gentle movement, like a short walk, can also make a big difference when you’re down. Don’t be afraid to ask for help with everyday tasks if you need it. In that vein…

3. Lean on your support system

You don’t have to go through this alone. Your friends, family, and community can be a source of immense comfort. Let them know what you need, whether it’s someone to listen, help with chores, or just a quiet presence. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to people you know, consider seeking out a support group or a therapist.
