Have a case of the Mondays? Barely making it through hump day? Living for the weekend?
You aren’t alone. Work stress is real stress, and busy schedules can make it that much more anxiety-inducing. If you love your job, that’s great, but even for those of us who do, chances are good there are still personal commitments outside of work that you want and/or need to put first.
Get ahead of your workplace anxiety by keeping some key ideas in mind.
1. You’re a person first
Our jobs are often an important part of maintaining a healthy, sustainable lifestyle, but if work has started to feel less and less sustainable, it may be time to take a mental health day (or a few) to ground yourself in your own personhood. Work-life balance is key to overall well-being, so if your scales have shifted too far towards work, take the time you need to regain balance.
2. Planning makes perfect
You may find yourself wondering how things got so out of balance in the first place. Of course the unexpected is to be expected, especially in ever-evolving work environments, but this is where planning comes in. The less you leave your fate up to deadlines the better. Plan and work ahead, so when a curveball inevitably comes your way, you’re prepared to just keep on cruising.
3. Compartmentalizing is key
Sometimes, no matter how much you plan ahead and strive for balance, something out of your control might keep you at the office later and throw you off your professional stride. On the bad days, remember that taking some time away from the source of your stress will make you that much more equipped to handle it. Whether it’s by heading home to have dinner with your family or by practicing a five-minute meditation, compartmentalizing is often key to professional success.
