5 Ways to Get Involved This Mental Health Awareness Month

Category:

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Get involved, whether by helping others or helping yourself.

Topic Of Discussion

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Whether you’re just starting your own mental health journey or looking to help others start (or continue) on theirs, it’s a great time to focus on reducing stigma and encouraging healing.

Looking for some ideas on how to get started? Read on!

1. Volunteer

As stigmas around mental health have decreased in recent years, the number of organizations focused on supporting mental health has increased. By volunteering your time to such organizations, you can be part of the movement to reduce stigmas and connect with others who share your passion in the process.

2. Donate

Too busy to volunteer your time? You can always donate to organizations that support mental health, and those donations don’t have to be monetary! Gently used clothes or toys, food, or basic personal hygiene items are often in high demand with organizations that help others.

3. Share your story

Have you had your own mental health journey? Sharing your story of ongoing healing can do a lot to encourage others to seek help and reduce stigmas around mental healthcare. Social media provides powerful platforms for telling your story, and doing so is a prime opportunity to use these platforms for good.

4. Connect with loved ones in need of support

Sometimes, the best ways to help with bigger, global issues require acting locally. Has someone you care about been showing signs of anxiety or depression? Offer support. Sometimes, simply showing up for someone makes all the difference in terms of helping them find the strength to move forward.

5. Care for your mental health

Think of the Audrey Hepburn quote: “Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it’s at the end of your arm. As you get older, remember you have another hand: The first is to help yourself, the second is to help others.”

Sometimes, you must help yourself before you can help others. If you’re looking to start your mental health journey, good for you. Mental health matters, but with its history steeped in stigmas, seeking help is a big step for many people. Take comfort that the help you need is waiting for you, and—while the first step is often the hardest—taking it can be crucial to living the healthy and fulfilling life you’re worthy of.
